The Susan George Pulimood Memorial Oration (Pulimood Oration) of Visakha Vidyalaya was held on 23rd July 2016 at the Jeremias Dias Hall of the school for the 26th consecutive year. The event was graced by the principal Ms. Sandamali Aviruppola, many former principals and distinguished guests.
The Pulimood Oration is organized annually, in honour of the memory of a beloved and revered principal - Mrs. Pulimood; who served the school for 22 long years which marked the ‘Golden Age’ of the school. This selfless dedicated educationist was instrumental in shaping the direction of the education of Buddhist women in the country making the pathway for them to achieve greater heights in their academic performances. The watchful eyes of Mrs. Pulimood and her excellent staff ensured that the students excelled in their studies bringing credit and fame to the school and to the country at large. Under her strong patronage; Visakha Vidyalaya was established a ‘Super Grade’ school in the island.
The orator for this year was Prof. Manouri Senanayake who is designated as a Senior Professor - Pediatrics at the Faculty of Medicine at University of Colombo. The oration was delivered on “Safeguarding Children and Childhood from Today’s Environmental Hazards” – a timely topic in todays’ context. In her oration; Prof. Senanayake discussed the importance of the environment to children and shared the findings of her published research on aspects such as physical, chemical, biological, psychosocial and digital environments. She supported her points with the relevant statistics and reliable evidence grasping the attention of the audience.
It was delightfully heartening to see Visakhians; old and new, enthusiastically participate in this event and it was ended with a positive note marking yet another successful Pulimood Oration in Visakha history.
