Visakha Vidyalaya takes home the ‘Winner’ title of the Inter School Shakespeare Drama Competition (Girls) 2016 which was held on 30th September at the Bishop’s College Auditorium. The other finalists were St. Lawrence College, Devi Balika Vidyalaya and Newstead Girls College. Visakha’s strong performance of their own rendition of Romeo and Juliet saw them through to winning the competition. Tracy Holsinger, Sabreena Niles and Hasitha Pathirana were the panel of judges for this 43rd Inter School Shakespeare Drama Competition which was organized by the Rotary Club of Colombo North together with the Colombo YMCA.
Visakha bagged most of the prestigious individual awards presented including the ‘All Island Best Actress’ won by Sashini Mudalige and ‘All Island Best Supporting Actress’ award won by Rumashi Dissanayake. Visakha also secured the award for the ‘Best Stagecraft’.
Ms. Asiri Payagala - the teacher in charge, ensured that the girls sailed well throughout the competition as strong contenders. The magnificent costumes which caught the attention of the judges as well as the audience were designed by the talented Hiruni Herath. Hasini Jayawardena was the backstage manager and she was supported by the backstage crew namely; Nethmi Saranajeewa, Thisali Siriwardana, Samali Agalawatta, Piyusha Sumanapala, Senuri Siribaddana and Thenuri Siribaddana.
