Visakha Vidyalaya clinched both the Under 15 and Under 19 trophies at the seventh annual Bishop’s-Visakha Water Polo encounter, held on 13 October at the Police Pool.
At the end of the first quarter of the junior match, Bishop’s College was leading 1-0. But the Visakhians fought back to take home the Bishop Chapman Challenge trophy by winning 5-3.
Binari Perera scored three goals and Nuravi Aselaarachchi and Janisha Katuwapitiya scored one goal each for Visakha, while Avasha Borham scored two goals and Asini Molligoda one goal for Bishop’s.
In the senior match, right from the start Viskha showed their dominance leading 2-0 by the end of the first quarter. It was certainly not the Bishopians’ day as they missed goals throughout the game and managed to score their first goal only in the second quarter.
It was evident that the Bishopians could not keep up with the Visakhian’s long passes, attacking skills and speed of play, almost surrendering a four-goal margin at one point. The Viskhians won the inaugural match for the Jeremias Challenge Trophy 7-4.
Limashi Kosgodage scored three goals, Aneka Abeywickrema two and Shaleena Peiris and Akshana Perera finished with one goal apiece for the Visakhians. Aneesah Fowzie scored three goals and Ashanthi Sumanpala one goal for the Bishopians.
It was a fitting tribute by the Visakhians to their founder, in whose memory the trophy was donated. Even after almost a century of her founding Visakha, the lasses kept the flag flying high by displaying their strength and prowess in the game.
The Chief Guest at the occasion was Asangi Wijesundera while the Guest of Honour was Lukshani Ratnayake.
