Vibhavi Madhusha of Alethea International College clinched the under 19 boys singles championship when he trounced Lahiru Ambegoda of Ananda College 21/18,21/14 in the finals of the 42nd AVI Junior National Badminton Championship concluded at Royal College Sports Complex yesterday.
In the girls singles, Kavindi Ishara of Sirimavo Balika Vidyalaya, Colombo won the under 19 girls singles title defeating Sushmitha Illangakoon of Musaeus College 21/17, 21/11.
A scintillating fight was witnessed in the boys’ under 17 singles final where Chamika Karunaratne of Royal College, the younger brother of Olympian suttler Niluka Karunaratne outplayed Buwaneka Gunatilleke of Richmond College,Galle in straight sets (21/15,21/15).
Thilini Hendahewa of Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo trounced her school-mate Ilmi Warangana 21/10,21/4 in the under 17 girls event.
Buwaneka Gunatilleke and Pramodya Ranaweera of Richmond College,Galle beat Krishan Dhanushka and Sachin Dias of St.Sebastian’s College Moratuwa after a hard fought game (21/19,21/19) in the under 17 boys doubles final while Thilini Hendahewa and Ilmi Warangana of Vishaka Vidyalaya beat Yasmitha Dayaratne (Visakha Vidyalaya) partnered by Kavindika Binuri 21/19,17/21,21/19 in the same age category girls final. In the mixed doubles, Chamika Karunaratne partnered by Thilini Hendahewa outsmarted Kavindi Ishara and Vibhavi Madusha.
Richmond College, Galle won the boys’ Overall Championship and Visakha Vidyalaya won the Overall Championship of the girls category.
